Job Summary
As a Mosquito Surveillance Technician, you will help us watch and study mosquitoes. Your work is important to keep our community safe from diseases like West Nile virus and Zika virus. You will go out into the field to collect information about mosquito populations and help our team create plans to control them.
Responsibilities
In this job, you will do many different tasks, including:
- Field Surveys: You will visit different areas to look for places where mosquitoes breed and to count how many mosquitoes you find.
- Collecting Samples: You will use traps to catch mosquitoes and bring them back for study.
- Data Entry: You will write down what you find and put this information into our computer system to help us understand mosquito trends.
- Public Education: You will help teach people in the community about how to prevent mosquito bites and reduce mosquito breeding.
- Assist in Control Measures: You will help our team put plans into action to control mosquito populations, which may include applying special treatments to certain areas.
- Team Collaboration: You will work closely with your team members to share findings and plan the next steps.
- Equipment Maintenance: You will help keep the traps and other equipment clean and ready for use.
- Safety First: You will follow safety guidelines to keep yourself and the community safe while you work.
Qualifications
Required Skills

- Knowledge of Mosquito Biology: Understanding how mosquitoes live and breed can be very helpful.
- Experience with Fieldwork: If you have worked outside in similar jobs, that’s a plus!
- Public Speaking: Being comfortable talking in front of groups can help you teach others about mosquito prevention.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need at least a high school diploma or equivalent. If you have taken extra classes in science or health, that would be great!
- Experience: Previous work in public health or a similar area is helpful but not necessary.
Location
This job is in Harris County, Houston, Texas. You will travel to different areas within the county, so you will need a valid driver’s license and a reliable car to get to your work sites.
