Epidemiologist II Job – San Diego County Full Time

What is an Epidemiologist II?

As an Epidemiologist II, you’ll help identify how and why diseases spread in a community. Your work will guide decisions that protect public health. This role is key to supporting disease prevention, epidemic response, and health education efforts in San Diego County.

Key Responsibilities

Track and Analyze Health Data

• Collect and examine health data from clinics, hospitals, and labs
• Use statistics and software to find trends and patterns
• Study how diseases affect different groups and neighborhoods

Respond to Disease Outbreaks

• Investigate causes of outbreaks and recommend actions
• Work with public health teams to control the spread of illness

Report Findings and Share Health Information

• Present data in meetings and public briefings
• Help media and local agencies share accurate health updates

Support Health Education and Prevention

Inform Health Policy and Planning

• Advise officials on public health strategies
• Recommend health policies and response plans
• Help write public health guidelines and procedures

Qualifications

Required Skills

• Strong data analysis and problem-solving abilities
• Experience using tools for health data and geographic tracking
• Knowledge of disease transmission and outbreak control
• Excellent communication skills to explain complex findings

Preferred Skills

• Previous work in public health or outbreak response
• Knowledge of infectious and chronic diseases
• Familiarity with mapping software or geographic health tools (GIS)
• Bilingual or multilingual skills (especially Spanish)

Education and Experience

To qualify for the Epidemiologist II role, you should have:

• A Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a related field
• At least 2 years of professional experience in epidemiology or public health research
• A Doctorate (Ph.D.) or public health research experience is a plus
