Our Health & Human Services Agency is looking for a Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator to help stop substance abuse before it starts. This job is about teaching people, especially kids and families, how to make healthy choices and stay away from drugs and alcohol. You will work with schools, local groups, and many others in the County of San Diego, CA to spread helpful information and support people who need it.
Job Summary
As a Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, your job is to help stop people from using drugs and alcohol by teaching them about the dangers and showing them ways to stay healthy. You will make and run programs that help people learn how to avoid getting involved with substance abuse. You will work with schools, families, and other groups to give out helpful information and find new ways to support people who might need help.
Your work will help many people in the San Diego area make better choices for their health and happiness!
Responsibilities
Your day-to-day tasks will be important for making a big difference in the community. Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Create and Run Programs: You will create fun, educational programs to teach kids and families about staying away from drugs and alcohol.
- Talk to the Community: You will visit schools, community centers, and other places to talk to people about how to avoid substance abuse. You’ll share information and offer support to those who need it.
- Lead Workshops and Presentations: You’ll give talks to students, parents, and teachers about the dangers of substance abuse. You will explain in simple ways how to stay healthy and make good choices.
- Build Relationships: You’ll work with other community leaders and organizations to make sure everyone is helping to prevent substance abuse.
- Track Progress: You will keep track of how well the programs are working and make reports about what’s going well and what can be improved.
- Help People One-on-One: If someone is struggling with substance abuse, you may talk to them and give them the support they need or connect them with other helpful services.
- Write for Funding: You might help the team write applications for money (grants) to fund the programs we create. This will help make sure our work keeps going.
- Support Local Policies: You will help encourage local leaders to make rules that help prevent substance abuse.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
To do this job well, you should have these skills:
- Good Communication: You need to be able to talk to many people, including kids, parents, teachers, and other community members. It’s important to explain things in a way that everyone can understand.
- Organized: You will be running multiple programs and helping many people, so it’s important to stay organized and keep track of your work.
- Problem Solver: Sometimes things won’t go as planned, and you’ll need to find ways to fix problems or come up with new solutions.
- Caring and Kind: You should care about helping others. People who need help with substance abuse might be having a tough time, and showing kindness and understanding is important.
- Speaking Skills: You will be giving talks to large groups, so you need to be comfortable speaking in front of others.
- Team Player: You will work with many people, so being a good teammate and helping others is very important.
Preferred Skills:
These skills aren’t required, but they would help:
- Experience in Substance Abuse Prevention: If you’ve worked with any programs related to health or substance abuse before, that’s a big plus.
- Knowledge of San Diego: If you know about the communities in San Diego and the problems people face here, that will help you do your job better.
- Speak Another Language: If you can speak Spanish or another language, it will help you talk to more people in our community.
Education and Experience
- Education: You will need a high school diploma. A college degree in something like public health, social work, or education is a big plus.
- Experience: It’s helpful if you have worked in health programs or with the community before. But if you don’t have experience, that’s okay as long as you are eager to learn.
- Certifications: If you have any certificates in substance abuse prevention, that’s great, but it’s not required. We will train you to do the job.
Location
This job is based in San Diego County, CA. You will work at different locations around the county, including schools and community centers, to teach people and offer support.
Salary and Benefits
