Job Summary

In this job, you will work with people facing different life challenges. You’ll listen to their needs, find out what services they qualify for, and connect them with the right resources. You will also help them understand how to use these services and check in to make sure they’re getting the support they need. You will be part of a team of social workers, counselors, and other specialists who all work together to help people lead better lives.

Main Job Duties

As a Social Services Specialist, your job will include several key responsibilities:

Meeting and Assessing Clients

• Talk with people to understand their specific needs and challenges.
• Decide what services or programs they qualify for, like food aid or housing help.
• Guide them to the right resources that can make a positive difference in their lives.

Offering Support and Resources

• Help people fill out applications for services, like healthcare, housing, or job programs.
• Connect clients with local resources, like food banks, shelters, and support groups.
• Explain how these resources work so clients can use them confidently.

Keeping Track of Client Progress

• Keep detailed records of each client’s needs and the services they’re using.
• Follow up with clients to see how they’re doing and if they need more help.
• Work closely with other team members to make sure clients are getting the best support possible.

Advocating for Clients

• Speak up for clients who may not be able to get help on their own.
• Partner with other local agencies to expand resources for clients.
• Support community efforts that help make life better for people in need.

Working with a Team

• Share updates and information with team members to help clients effectively.
• Meet regularly with your team to discuss cases and improve the services you provide.
• Attend training sessions to learn new ways to support clients.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, certain skills and qualifications are required.

Basic Skills You Need

• Good listening and communication skills to understand clients’ needs and help them find solutions.
• Empathy and kindness to support people going through tough situations.
• Ability to solve problems by finding the right resources for each client.
• Strong time-management skills to handle multiple cases.
• Good organizational skills to keep accurate notes on each client.

Extra Skills That Are Helpful

• Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish, are a big plus.
• Familiarity with community programs that help with housing, food, or health.
• Previous experience working with people in need or in a social services role.
• Basic understanding of crisis intervention to support people in difficult situations.
• Respect for all cultures and backgrounds to better understand diverse clients.

Education and Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or a similar area is preferred.
• 1-2 years of experience in a social services or case management role is helpful.
• We may also consider people with similar education and experience if they have the skills we need.

Job Location

This position is based in San Diego County, California. You will work in an office and may also travel within the county to meet with clients and attend community events. Our agency supports a mix of in-office and remote work.
