Job Summary
As a Public Health Communications Officer, your job will be to create and share health messages. You’ll write information that explains health programs, tips, and services to help the public stay healthy. You will also help during health emergencies by sending out important updates and news to people. You will use many different ways to share these messages, like social media, websites, and press releases.
This role is very important because it helps people in San Diego understand how to take care of their health. Your work will make sure that everyone gets the right information in the best way possible.
Responsibilities
As a Public Health Communications Officer, you will:
- Write Health Messages: Write clear and simple messages that help people understand health tips and information.
- Share Information: Create posts for social media, write articles, and send out press releases to let people know about important health updates.
- Work with Others: You will work with other health experts, government workers, and community leaders to make sure everyone is getting the right information.
- Help During Emergencies: If there is a health emergency (like a disease outbreak or a natural disaster), you will help by sending out information to keep everyone safe.
- Answer Questions: You will talk to the public and answer their questions about health. You might have to explain things in a way that is easy for everyone to understand.
- Make Health Events Fun: Help promote health events like health fairs, workshops, and classes. You will help people learn about good health practices.
- Listen to Feedback: Collect feedback from the community and make sure the information you share is working.
Qualifications
To do well in this job, you should have:
Required Skills:
- Good Writing Skills: You need to be able to write clearly and simply so everyone can understand the information.
- Knowledge of Health: You should know a little bit about health and why it is important to share health information with the public.
- Social Media Skills: You should be comfortable using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share information with people.
- Creative Ideas: You will need to think of new and fun ways to share health information that grabs people’s attention.
- Attention to Detail: You need to make sure everything you write is accurate and correct.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Sometimes things don’t go as planned, so you will need to find ways to solve problems and keep things running smoothly.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in Health Communication: If you have worked in health communications or have knowledge of public health, it will be helpful.
- Speak Another Language: If you can speak more than one language, that’s a big plus! It helps reach more people in the community.
- Design Skills: If you know how to make things look nice on paper or online (like using programs like Canva), that will be helpful.
- Crisis Communication: If you’ve ever helped manage a situation where important information needed to be shared fast, that’s a big plus.
Education and Experience
To apply for this job, you will need:
- Education: You should have at least a high school diploma or a college degree in something like communications, public health, or a related field. If you don’t have a degree, experience working in communication jobs can help too.
- Experience: It’s helpful if you’ve worked in a job where you had to write or talk to the public about important topics. Having at least two years of experience in this area is good, but if you’ve done volunteer work in a similar field, that counts too!
