The Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) helps people in San Diego who are having a hard time keeping their homes. As a Homelessness Prevention Advocate, you will work with people who are at risk of becoming homeless and help them find ways to stay in their homes. Job Summary

As a Homelessness Prevention Advocate, your job will be to help families and individuals who are about to lose their homes. You will talk to people, learn about their problems, and help them find resources like financial aid or legal help to keep their homes. You will also guide them through the process of getting help from other services in the community.

You will be a helper and a problem-solver, making sure people do not end up homeless. You will play an important role in changing their lives for the better.

Job Responsibilities

Here are the things you will do every day in this job:

• Talk to clients: You will meet with people who are at risk of losing their homes. You will listen to their problems and ask questions to understand what they need.
• Help find resources: You will help people find programs that can give them money to pay rent, help them talk to their landlords, or get free legal advice.
• Provide support: You will check in with people to make sure they are getting the help they need and follow up with them to see if things are improving.
• Help solve problems: Sometimes, you will need to talk to landlords or other organizations to make sure clients are treated fairly and can stay in their homes.
• Work with others: You will work with other people and organizations in the community to get the best support for your clients.
• Keep records: You will keep track of the people you help and the services they use. This helps make sure no one is forgotten.

Skills Needed

To do this job, you need to have a few important skills:

Required Skills:

• Good Communication: You should be able to talk to people clearly and listen carefully to what they say. It’s important to be kind and patient.
• Problem Solving: Sometimes you will have to think of creative ways to help people who are in tough situations.
• Organization: You will need to keep track of lots of information, like names, phone numbers, and important dates.
• Caring: You should really care about helping people who are in need and be understanding of their problems.
• Teamwork: You will work with other people in the agency and with community partners. You should enjoy working together.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with social services: If you have worked with people who need help before, that’s great, but it’s not required.
• Language skills: If you can speak more than one language, especially Spanish, it will be helpful.
• Understanding of laws: If you know about tenant rights or housing laws, that’s a plus.

Education and Experience

Education:

• You need to have a high school diploma or GED.
• If you have a college degree in something like social work or psychology, that’s a bonus, but not required.

Experience:

• It’s helpful if you have worked in a job where you helped people before, but it’s not required.
• It’s especially good if you have worked with people who are struggling with housing issues or homelessness.

Location

This job is located in San Diego County, CA. You will spend time both in the office and out in the community, meeting people where they live and work.
