Job Summary
As a Patient Navigation Specialist, your job is to help people who are trying to get healthcare services. You will be their guide, making sure they understand how to get the care they need. You will help patients make appointments, understand their treatments, and find resources for support. Your job is very important because you will help patients feel less confused and more confident about their health.
Responsibilities
Here are the main things you will do as a Patient Navigation Specialist:
- Help patients get the care they need: You will talk to patients and help them make appointments with doctors or find other healthcare services.
- Answer questions: Patients may have lots of questions. You will explain things in a way they can understand, so they feel more comfortable.
- Be a friendly guide: Sometimes, patients feel lost or worried. You will listen to their concerns and help them feel safe and taken care of.
- Keep track of patient records: You will help make sure all patient information is correct and up-to-date.
- Work with doctors and nurses: You will work closely with healthcare providers to make sure patients get the right care.
- Check in with patients: After appointments, you may call patients to see how they’re doing and make sure they’re getting the care they need.
- Help patients with emotional support: If patients feel worried or scared, you will be there to talk to them and help them feel better.
Qualifications
To be a great Patient Navigation Specialist, you need to have these skills:
Required Skills:
- Good communication: You need to be able to explain things clearly to patients and doctors. You should be able to talk to people in a friendly, easy-to-understand way.
- Kind and caring: It’s important to be kind, patient, and understanding, especially when people feel scared or worried about their health.
- Problem-solving: Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and you need to help figure out solutions to problems.
- Organized: You’ll need to keep track of patient appointments and make sure all records are correct.
- Being a good listener: You need to listen carefully to patients so you can help them with their concerns.
- Understanding healthcare: It’s helpful to know a little about healthcare systems, how doctors work, and what kind of services patients might need.
- Cultural awareness: You should be respectful and open-minded when talking to people from different backgrounds.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in healthcare: If you have worked in a healthcare setting before, it’s a big plus, but not required.
- Speaking more than one language: If you speak Spanish or another language, that would be helpful because many people in San Diego speak different languages.
- Knowing local resources: If you know about local healthcare services or other resources in San Diego, that would be great.
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need a high school diploma (or something similar).
- It’s helpful to have a college degree, especially in healthcare, social work, or a similar area. But if you don’t have one, don’t worry!
Experience:
- It’s good to have some experience working with people in healthcare or helping them with services.
- If you’ve helped people before in any job or volunteered, that’s also helpful!

Salary and Benefits
- Salary: You will earn a fair salary, and it will depend on your experience. The pay is around $45,000 – $55,000 per year.
