What You’ll Do as a Public Health Educator
As a Public Health Educator, your main job will be to teach people about health. You’ll help make sure everyone has the information they need to make healthy choices. You’ll get to work with doctors, nurses, and community leaders to reach as many people as possible. Here are some of the things you’ll be doing:
Create Health Programs
- Make health programs and activities to help people learn about topics like eating well, staying active, and mental health.
- Plan events like health workshops and community meetings to bring people together and share information.
- Work with other people in the community to create programs that meet their needs.
Health Outreach
- Go to different places in the community to share health information where it’s needed the most.
- Teach classes and give talks in places like schools, community centers, and events.
- Talk to people one-on-one to answer questions and help them make healthier choices.
Track Program Success
- Collect feedback from the community to see how well the programs are working.
- Make changes to programs based on what people need and want.
- Share program results with the HHSA team to keep improving our services.
Share Health Resources
- Hand out brochures, flyers, and other educational materials to spread information.
- Help people find the health services they need and connect them with doctors or clinics.
What We’re Looking For
We need someone who is excited to make a difference in the community. Here’s what we’re looking for:
Important Skills
- Good at talking and listening: You need to be able to explain health information in simple words.
- Organized and reliable: You’ll be planning events and need to keep things running smoothly.
- Comfortable speaking in front of groups: You’ll be leading workshops and presentations.
- Basic health knowledge: You should know about general health topics, like eating healthy, exercising, and managing stress.
- Team player: You’ll be working closely with other healthcare workers and community leaders.
Extra Skills That Would Be Nice
- Bilingual (especially Spanish): Knowing another language can help you connect with more people.
- Understanding of local health issues: It helps to know the specific health needs of the San Diego area.
- Familiar with social media: Knowing how to use social media can help us reach more people.
Education and Experience
To do this job well, here’s what we’d like you to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Education, or a similar field.
- Experience working in health education for at least one year. If you’re just starting but have a strong interest in health and helping others, we’d still love to hear from you.
- Extra certifications in health education (optional, but they’re a plus!).
Location
This job is located in San Diego County, California. You’ll work in the office but also travel to different places in the community to meet people, organize events, and do outreach.
