We are looking for a Mental Health Counselor to work with the Health & Human Services Agency in San Diego County, California. As a counselor, you will work with people who need help understanding and managing their emotions. You’ll help people feel better and live healthier lives.
Job Summary
As a Mental Health Counselor, you will help people who are going through tough times with their emotions or mental health. You will meet with them to talk about their feelings and give them advice on how to feel better. You might work with people who feel sad, scared, or worried. Some people may have problems like depression, anxiety, or stress.
You will also help them create a plan to feel better and keep track of how they are doing. Your job will be to help people feel safe, supported, and ready to face their challenges.
Responsibilities
Here are the things you will do in this job:
- Talk to People: You will meet with people to understand what is making them feel bad. You will listen to them carefully and help them come up with ways to feel better.
- Help People Plan: After talking with them, you will make a plan to help them get better. This might include going to therapy, joining a group, or getting other kinds of help.
- Help During a Crisis: Sometimes people need help right away. You will know what to do to help them during difficult times.
- Track Progress: You will check on how the person is doing and if they need more help. You might change the plan if needed.
- Work with a Team: You will work with other counselors, doctors, and helpers to make sure the person gets all the support they need.
- Teach and Support: You will teach people and their families about mental health. You will explain how they can stay healthy and cope with their problems.
- Keep Records: You will keep records of your work with each person to make sure everything is safe and organized.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has the following skills and experience:
Required Skills:
- Good Communication: You should be able to talk clearly and listen carefully to people.
- Kindness and Patience: You should be understanding and patient with people, especially when they feel upset.
- Problem-Solving: You will need to help people solve their problems, so it’s important to think creatively.
- Teamwork: You will work with other people, so you need to be able to work well with others.
- Respect for Privacy: It’s important to keep people’s private information safe and secure.
Preferred Skills:
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you can speak more than one language, like Spanish, that would be a plus!
- Experience with Kids or Teens: If you have worked with children, teens, or families before, it’s helpful.
- Knowing Local Help Resources: It’s good if you know about other local places or services that can help people.
Education and Experience
To qualify for this job, you need:
- Education: A Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a similar field.
- License (Preferred): It’s helpful if you already have a special license to work as a counselor in California. If you don’t have it yet but are working on it, you can still apply.
- Experience: Having some experience working with people who need help with their feelings or mental health is great, but if you’re new, that’s okay too!
Location
You will work in San Diego County, California. This area is very nice, with lots of sunny weather, beaches, and fun things to do. It’s a great place to live and work!
