The Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) is looking for a Health Equity Specialist to help people in San Diego County get the healthcare and services they need. Job Summary
As a Health Equity Specialist, you will work to help reduce health problems in communities that don’t always get the same healthcare as others. You will work with different groups, like local doctors, hospitals, and community leaders, to help create programs that make healthcare more equal for everyone.
Your main job will be to help people in places where there are more health problems or less access to good healthcare. You will also work to make sure everyone has access to important services that help people stay healthy. By doing this, you will help the community become stronger and healthier.
Responsibilities
As a Health Equity Specialist, you will do many important things, such as:
- Finding Health Problems: Look at where people in the community are struggling to get healthcare and other services.
- Talking to the Community: Work with people in different neighborhoods to understand what they need to be healthier.
- Creating Health Programs: Help design programs that give people the tools and resources to improve their health.
- Making Fairer Policies: Help make rules and laws that make healthcare more equal for everyone.
- Teaching the Community: Help spread the word about ways to stay healthy and what services are available to them.
- Collecting Data: Gather information to see how well health programs are working.
- Helping Get Funding: Help find money to support health programs by writing grants.
- Training Others: Help teach other people in the community how they can support health equity.
Qualifications
Required Skills
To do well in this job, you should have these skills:
- Understanding of Health Equity: Know what health equity means and why it’s important for everyone to have the same chance at good health.
- Good Communication: Be able to talk clearly to different people, including community members, doctors, and leaders.
- Problem-Solving: Be able to figure out ways to help communities with health problems and find solutions.
- Teamwork: Work well with others, including people from different backgrounds.
- Cultural Awareness: Understand and respect different cultures, and know how to work with people from different communities.
- Organizing Skills: Keep track of different tasks and manage your time well.
- Public Speaking: Be comfortable talking in front of groups of people.
Preferred Skills
These skills are helpful, but not required:
- Experience with Health or Social Services: If you’ve worked in public health or with people who need extra support, that’s great!
- Speaking Other Languages: If you speak Spanish or another language, it’s a plus.
- Grant Writing: If you know how to write to get funding for programs, that’s a helpful skill.
- Leadership Experience: If you have experience leading a team or managing a project, that’s great, too!
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need to have a Bachelor’s degree in something like public health, social work, or community health.
- A Master’s degree in public health or a similar field is a plus, but not required.
Experience:
- It’s helpful if you’ve worked for 2-3 years in a job related to health, social services, or community work.
- If you’ve worked with people who don’t have access to good healthcare or have health problems, that’s especially helpful!
Location
This job is based in San Diego County, California. You may need to travel around to different places in the county to meet with people or go to community events.
