What Does an Epidemiology Physician Do?
An Epidemiology Physician uses health data to understand how diseases spread and how to prevent them. In this role, you’ll analyze medical trends, lead investigations during outbreaks, and support programs that keep people healthy. Your work will help shape public health policy and guide community health decisions across San Diego County.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate Public Health Issues
- Study how diseases spread in different communities
- Identify causes, patterns, and risk factors
- Respond to disease outbreaks and health emergencies
Analyze Health Data
- Review and interpret medical and public health data
- Use data tools and software to find trends and problems
- Provide evidence-based recommendations to leadership
Collaborate With Others
- Work with doctors, public health nurses, and outreach teams
- Help develop strategies for community wellness programs
- Support partnerships with schools, clinics, and nonprofit groups
Share Findings and Educate
- Write clear, informative health reports and presentations
- Help educate the public on disease prevention and healthy living
- Communicate public health risks and updates to leaders and the public
Improve Public Health Programs

Required Qualifications
- Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
- California Medical License or eligibility to obtain one

Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Public Health (MPH) or related graduate degree
- Three or more years of experience in epidemiology or public health
