Job Summary
As a Chronic Disease Epidemiologist, your job is to help find ways to reduce the number of people with long-term (chronic) illnesses. You’ll gather data, study patterns of diseases, and help create health programs that can improve the health of people in Harris County. Your work will help make our community stronger and healthier, as you work alongside local hospitals, schools, and health organizations.
Responsibilities
Collecting and Analyzing Data
- Gather Information: Collect data on chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer in Harris County.
- Study Patterns: Look at the causes and trends of these diseases, especially in groups that are more likely to get them.
- Analyze Data: Examine current public health strategies and use data to suggest improvements.
Creating Health Programs
- Develop Programs: Help design and implement health programs that prevent chronic diseases.
- Raise Awareness: Create campaigns that teach people how to avoid and manage chronic diseases.
- Work with Teams: Collaborate with other health experts to ensure programs meet county health goals.
Reporting and Sharing Information
- Write Reports: Prepare reports that explain your findings and trends in chronic diseases.
- Present Information: Share your results with doctors, community leaders, and the public.
- Make Recommendations: Use your research to suggest policies and programs that can help prevent chronic diseases.
Engaging with the Community
- Team Up with Others: Partner with hospitals, non-profits, and local groups to promote community health.
- Education: Help people understand simple lifestyle changes that can lower their chances of getting sick.
- Public Health Events: Attend health events and share knowledge on preventing chronic diseases.
Qualifications
We are looking for a friendly, detail-oriented, and team-focused individual who loves studying data and finding ways to improve public health.
Required Skills
- Good at Analyzing Data: You should enjoy working with data and be able to understand complex health information.
- Strong Communication Skills: You need to explain scientific information in a way that is easy for people to understand.
- Project Management: Able to plan and complete tasks on time.
- Problem Solver: Identify issues in health strategies and find ways to fix them.
- Good with People: Enjoy working with others and communicating with a wide range of people.
Preferred Skills
- Visualizing Data: Experience using programs like Tableau or Excel to make data easy to understand.
- Health Policy Knowledge: Some knowledge of health policies, especially about chronic diseases.
- Community Outreach: Experience conducting workshops or events for public health.
- Bilingual Skills: Speaking both English and Spanish would be a big plus!
Education and Experience
Required Education
- Master’s Degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a similar field.
Preferred Experience
- 2+ years of experience in public health or epidemiology, especially in chronic disease prevention or research.
