Public Health Advocate Full Time

As a Public Health Advocate, your job will be to help people learn about staying healthy, find good healthcare, and support programs that improve health in the community. You will work with many different groups, like schools, doctors, and local leaders, to make sure everyone has the tools they need to be healthy.

Job Summary

As a Public Health Advocate, you will work with others to teach people about health and wellness. You will help people learn about healthy habits, like eating good food and exercising, and talk about how to stay safe and prevent illness. You will also help organize health events in your community, like health fairs or fitness programs. The goal is to make sure everyone has the right information and access to healthcare resources.

Responsibilities

Here’s what you will do as a Public Health Advocate:

• Teach and Educate: You will talk to people in the community about staying healthy. This might include giving talks, handing out flyers, or helping at health fairs.
• Work with Other Groups: You will team up with local organizations, like schools or health clinics, to help people get the health services they need.
• Help Plan Health Programs: You will help create programs that teach healthy habits, like eating well or staying active. You might help organize community walks, exercise classes, or workshops about healthy eating.
• Support People: Sometimes people need help finding health services, and you will be there to guide them. Whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or a nutrition class, you will make sure people know where to go.
• Track Health Information: You will collect information about how healthy the community is. This will help figure out what programs are working and what might need to be changed.
• Encourage Healthy Habits: You will help spread the word about things like washing hands, getting vaccinated, or stopping smoking.

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who loves helping people and wants to make a difference. Here’s what we need:

Required Skills

• Good Communication: You need to be able to talk to people clearly and listen carefully to them. You will need to explain things like why exercise is important or how to stay safe during a flu outbreak.
• Teamwork: You will work with lots of people—schools, doctors, community groups—so being a team player is very important.
• Problem Solving: Sometimes, there are challenges to overcome. You might need to come up with ideas to solve problems, like how to help people in your community eat healthier or get more exercise.
• Organized: You will have a lot of tasks to do, like organizing health events and keeping track of information. Being able to stay organized will help you do your job well.
• Kindness: You need to be caring and understand that everyone has different needs when it comes to health.

Preferred Skills

• Bilingual: If you speak more than one language, that’s a big plus! It can help you reach even more people in the community, especially those who speak Spanish.
• Experience Helping Others: If you’ve helped with a health program before or volunteered in your community, that’s great!
• Speaking in Front of Groups: If you feel comfortable speaking in front of people, that’s a helpful skill for this job. You might need to give talks or lead small groups.

Education and Experience

• Education: We’re looking for someone with at least a high school diploma. A college degree in health or a related subject is helpful, but not required.
• Experience: If you’ve worked in health programs or helped out in your community, that’s great! But even if you don’t have a lot of experience, you can still apply if you are passionate about helping others.
• Training: If you don’t have experience with things like first aid or CPR, don’t worry! We can help train you.

Location

This job is in San Diego County, California. You will work in many different places, like local health centers, schools, or parks where health events are held. Some travel within the County will be needed.
