The Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) is looking for a Health Communication Specialist to join our team in San Diego County, California. Job Summary:
As a Health Communication Specialist, your job will be to help the public understand important health information. You will create content, like social media posts, newsletters, and videos, to help people know about health programs and services in San Diego County. You will also work with other health experts to make sure the messages are clear and easy to understand.

Job Responsibilities:
Here’s what you will do every day:
- Write Health Information: You will write easy-to-understand health messages for the public. This includes things like social media posts, news articles, flyers, and brochures.
- Create Social Media Posts: You will share health tips and information on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You’ll help get important messages out to the community.
- Work with Other Teams: You will work with other people in the health department and community groups to make sure we all have the same message about health.
- Plan Health Campaigns: You will help plan special health campaigns to teach people about important health issues, like flu shots or healthy eating.
- Check Campaign Success: You will look at how well our health messages are working and find ways to improve them.
- Help During Emergencies: If there is an emergency, like a disease outbreak, you may help share important information with the public to keep everyone safe.
- Host Events: You may help set up meetings or events to talk to the public about health programs and services available in the area.
Qualifications:
To be a great Health Communication Specialist, you should have the following skills:
Required Skills:
- Writing Skills: You should be able to write clearly and simply so people can easily understand the information.
- Social Media Knowledge: You should know how to use social media, like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to share important information.
- Good Communication: You should be able to speak and write in a way that everyone can understand.
- Teamwork: You should be a good team player and be able to work well with others.
- Creativity: You should have creative ideas for making health messages fun and interesting.
- Cultural Awareness: You should understand that people from different backgrounds need different types of messages and be able to share information that fits their needs.
Preferred Skills:
These skills are helpful, but not required:
- Public Health Knowledge: It’s helpful if you know about health topics, like how to stay healthy, prevent disease, or stay active.
- Graphic Design Skills: If you can create images or simple designs, like posters or flyers, that would be a plus!
- Bilingual: If you can speak more than one language (like Spanish), that would help you reach more people.
- Video Skills: If you know how to make simple videos, that would be a great bonus!
- Emergency Communication: If you have experience talking to people during emergencies, it would be useful.
Education and Experience:
Here’s what we’re looking for in terms of education and experience:
- Education: You need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in something like Communications, Public Health, Marketing, or Journalism.
- Experience: You need at least 2 years of experience working in a job where you communicated with people. This could be in writing, on social media, or talking to groups. If you have worked in public health or with the government before, that’s a plus!
Location:
This job is located in San Diego County, California. You may need to travel to different places within the county to meet with people or attend events.
Salary and Benefits:
This job offers a competitive salary, depending on your experience. The salary is typically between $50,000 and $70,000 per year.
