Job Summary
As a Child Protective Services Investigator, your job will be to look into reports of child abuse or neglect. You will talk to children, parents, and other people who know the family to understand if the child is safe. If the child is in danger, you will help find a safe place for them. You will also work with other people, like doctors and police officers, to make sure kids are safe and get the help they need.
What You Will Do: Responsibilities
In this job, you will have many important tasks to do:
- Investigate reports of child abuse or neglect: When someone reports that a child might be in danger, you will visit the home and talk to people to find out what happened.
- Make sure kids are safe: If a child is in a dangerous situation, you may need to help them find a safer place to live, like a foster home.
- Talk to families: You will work with parents and other family members to figure out how to make their home safer and better for the child.
- Work with other professionals: You will talk to doctors, police officers, and lawyers to make sure kids get the help they need.
- Keep records: You will write down everything you find out during investigations. It’s important to keep good notes about each case.
- Help families with support: You may give families information about services like counseling, food, or housing to help them improve their situation.
- Attend court hearings: Sometimes, you will go to court to explain what you found in your investigation and help decide what happens next for the child.
What You Need: Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has the following skills and experiences:
Required Skills:
- Good communication: You need to be able to talk to children and adults in a clear and kind way. You also need to listen carefully to what people say.
- Pay attention to details: It’s important to notice little details that might help keep a child safe.
- Problem-solving: Sometimes, you will need to think quickly and figure out the best way to help a child or family.
- Kindness and empathy: You should care about helping kids and families who might be going through tough times.
- Good organization: You will have many cases to keep track of, so it’s important to stay organized and keep records up to date.
- Knowledge about children and families: Understanding how children grow and how families work will help you do your job well.
- Stay calm under pressure: Sometimes, situations can be stressful. You need to stay calm and focused on helping the children.
Preferred Skills:
- Speak another language: If you can speak Spanish or another language, that’s a big plus because it helps you talk to more families.
- Experience working with kids or families: If you’ve worked with kids or families before, that’s great, but it’s not required.
- Know how to handle emergencies: If something unexpected happens, like a child being in immediate danger, you should be able to think fast and take action.
Education and Experience
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or a similar field is required. This means you need to have finished college or university.
Experience:
- One year of experience working in social services, child welfare, or a similar job is helpful. This could include any work where you helped children or families.
Where You Will Work: Location
This job is in San Diego County, California. You will need to travel around the county to visit families, schools, and other places where you can learn more about the situation.
