Job Summary
As a Behavioral Health Support Coordinator, your job is to help people who are struggling with mental health challenges. You will work with them to find the support they need, like counseling or other services. You will be a guide, helping people make the best decisions for their mental health and well-being.
You will work with many different people, like doctors, counselors, and other helpers, to make sure each person gets the care that is right for them.
Responsibilities
In this job, you will:
- Help People Feel Supported: Talk to people who need help and listen to what they are going through. You will be there to offer support and advice.
- Make Sure They Get the Right Help: You will find the services that people need, like doctors, therapy, or support groups. You will guide them in getting the right care.
- Keep Track of Information: You will keep notes on the help each person is getting. You’ll make sure everything is done on time and in a way that helps the person feel better.
- Help During Emergencies: If someone is having a crisis, you will step in to help. You will keep calm, help them feel safe, and get them the help they need quickly.
- Teach People About Mental Health: You will explain things about mental health and the services that can help. You will answer questions and make sure people understand how they can improve their health.
- Work With a Team: You won’t be working alone. You will be part of a team of doctors, counselors, and other helpers to make sure the person gets the best care.
- Help in the Community: You will also talk to other groups and organizations that help people with mental health problems. You’ll make sure people know about all the resources available to them.
Qualifications
To do this job well, you need to have certain skills. Here’s what we’re looking for:
Required Skills
- Good Communication: You need to be able to talk and listen to people clearly. It’s important to explain things in a way that is easy to understand.
- Kind and Caring: You should be compassionate. You will be helping people who may be feeling sad, stressed, or upset, so being kind and understanding is very important.
- Organized: You will need to keep track of a lot of information and stay on top of tasks. Being organized will help you manage your workload.
- Problem Solving: Sometimes things don’t go as planned. You will need to think of solutions to help people get the support they need.
- Teamwork: You will work with other people, like doctors and counselors. Being a team player is important to make sure the person gets the right care.
- Respecting Others: You should be respectful of all people, no matter where they come from or what they believe. Every person deserves care and respect.
Preferred Skills
- Experience Helping People with Mental Health: If you’ve worked with people who are struggling with their mental health before, that’s great! It’s helpful, but not required.
- Crisis Training: If you’ve had training in how to help someone in an emergency, that’s a big plus.
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you can speak other languages, especially Spanish, that would be really helpful for communicating with more people.
Education and Experience
Here’s what you need to get started:
Education
- You need to have finished high school (or have a GED).
- If you have a college degree, especially in social work, psychology, or something similar, that’s even better, but not required.
Experience
- 1-2 years of experience helping people in a healthcare or social service job is helpful. This could include work in a hospital, clinic, or school.
- If you have worked with people who have mental health issues or behavioral health challenges, that’s a bonus!
Location

- Salary: The pay for this job depends on your experience, but it usually starts around $45,000 to $55,000 per year.
