We are looking for a Rehabilitation Counselor to join our team at the Health & Human Services Agency in San Diego County, California. As a Rehabilitation Counselor, you will help people who have disabilities or face other challenges. You’ll work with them to find ways to live better lives, get jobs, and be more independent. Job Summary
As a Rehabilitation Counselor, you will work with people who need help because of physical, mental, or emotional challenges. Your job is to talk with them, listen to their problems, and help them find solutions. You will work with each person to create a plan to help them get back on their feet and live more independently.
This is a rewarding job because you will be able to help people who may feel stuck or lost, and guide them toward better opportunities.
Responsibilities
In this job, you will have several important tasks. Some of your main responsibilities will be:
- Helping People: You will talk to people and listen to their problems. You will give advice and encouragement to help them feel better and stronger.
- Creating Plans: Each person has different needs. You will help make a plan for each person to help them get the help they need. This could be finding a job, getting health care, or learning new skills.
- Tracking Progress: You will check on your clients from time to time to see how they are doing. You will make sure they are following their plan and improving.
- Connecting to Resources: You will find helpful resources for your clients, like job training, doctors, or even a place to live. You’ll help them get the help they need to make their lives better.
- Working with Others: You will talk to other people who help, like doctors, teachers, or social workers, to make sure your clients get all the help they need.
- Keeping Records: You will write down what you do with each client and keep track of their progress. This helps everyone stay on the same page.

To do this job well, you should have the following skills:
Required Skills
- Caring and Kind: You need to be a kind person who cares about others and wants to help them succeed.
- Good at Talking and Listening: You need to be able to talk to people in a way that makes them feel comfortable. You also need to listen to their problems carefully.
- Problem Solver: Sometimes, people may have problems that seem hard to fix. You need to be able to think of creative ways to help them solve their problems.
- Stay Organized: You’ll have many clients to help. You need to keep track of each one and make sure you follow up with them regularly.
- Respectful to All People: You’ll be working with people from many different backgrounds. It’s important to be respectful and understanding to everyone.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Job Help: If you have worked with helping people find jobs or training, that’s a big plus!
- Speaking Other Languages: If you speak Spanish (or another language), it will help you talk to more people and help them better.
- Computer Skills: Being able to use a computer is important. You’ll need to keep records and notes on the computer, so it helps if you know how to use basic computer programs.
Education and Experience
To qualify for this job, you should have:
- Education: You need to have at least a high school diploma. It is also good to have a college degree in something like Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or Rehabilitation Counseling.
- Experience: If you have worked or volunteered in a job that helps people, that’s great! We like to see at least one year of experience in a similar job. If you don’t have experience, don’t worry! If you’re a fast learner and really want to help, we’ll teach you the skills you need.
