Youth Development Officer Full Time

The Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) is looking for a Youth Development Officer. In this job, you will help young people in the community grow, learn, and succeed. Job Summary

As a Youth Development Officer, your job is to help kids and teens grow in healthy and positive ways. You’ll work with young people to create fun and educational programs that teach them important life skills. These programs will help them build confidence, make good choices, and become great leaders.

You will also work with families, schools, and local organizations to make sure the young people in San Diego County get all the help they need to succeed. Your job will be very important because you’ll be shaping the future of our youth!

Responsibilities

Here are some of the things you will do as a Youth Development Officer:

Program Planning and Teaching

• Create fun programs for kids and teens, like activities that help them learn, grow, and have fun.
• Organize events and programs that teach kids important life skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.
• Make sure programs are working well, and improve them when needed.

Mentoring and Supporting Youth

• Help kids and teens when they need advice or support with school, family, or friends.
• Be a mentor, guiding young people to make good choices and encouraging them to reach their goals.
• Build trusting relationships with kids and their families, so they feel comfortable asking for help.

Working with the Community

• Team up with schools, local groups, and other organizations to make sure kids and families have the support they need.
• Promote programs and let people in the community know about resources available to help young people.
• Work with other adults to create a network of support for kids and families in San Diego.

Keeping Records

• Track the progress of the kids in the programs and write reports on how things are going.
• Manage budgets to make sure there is enough money for all the programs and activities.

Qualifications

Required Skills

To be a Youth Development Officer, you need these important skills:

• Good communication skills – You should be able to talk to kids, parents, and others clearly and kindly.
• Leadership skills – You need to be a good leader and help kids feel inspired to do their best.
• Problem-solving skills – Sometimes, kids face challenges, and you will need to help them find solutions.
• Organized – You will be managing several programs, so staying organized is important.
• Patient and caring – You need to be patient and understand the challenges that kids might face.

Preferred Skills

These skills are not required, but they would help:

• Experience working with kids – If you have worked with young people before, that’s great!
• Knowledge of local community resources – It’s helpful to know what services are available in the area for kids and families.
• Cultural understanding – San Diego is a diverse community, so it’s important to be respectful of different cultures and backgrounds.
• Bilingual skills – If you can speak another language, like Spanish, it will help you connect with more families.

Education and Experience

Here’s what you need for this job:

• Education: You need to have a Bachelor’s degree in something like Social Work, Education, Psychology, or a related field.
• Experience: You need at least two years of experience working with kids in some way. This could be teaching, mentoring, or helping in a youth program.

Preferred Qualifications:

• If you have a Master’s degree or more years of experience, that’s a plus!
• If you have worked in a community-based job or with families before, that will help too.
