Job Summary
As a Public Health Nurse, you will help people stay healthy by providing care and giving important health information. You will also work to stop the spread of diseases by giving out vaccines, checking for health problems, and teaching people how to take care of themselves.
Your job will be about taking care of individuals and families, teaching them how to be healthy, and helping them when they are sick. You will work with other healthcare workers and community groups to make sure everyone in Harris County stays safe and healthy.
Responsibilities
In this job, you will have a lot of important things to do. Some of your main duties will include:
Helping People Learn About Health:
- Talk to people and teach them about staying healthy, like eating good food, exercising, and keeping their minds healthy.
- Help people learn how to avoid getting sick by sharing tips about hygiene and healthy habits.
- Organize activities like health classes or talks where people can learn more about how to stay well.
Preventing and Treating Diseases:
- Give people vaccines to protect them from dangerous diseases.
- Check people’s health by doing simple tests for things like blood pressure or signs of sickness.
- Work with doctors and other nurses to stop the spread of diseases in the community.
Taking Care of People:
- Help people who have health problems or need special care.
- Make sure people get the help they need, whether it’s for a medical issue or emotional support.
- Talk to people and their families to create plans to take care of them and keep them healthy.
Working With Others:
- Team up with other nurses, doctors, and health workers to make the community safer.
- Take part in health fairs or events where you can share information about staying healthy.
- Help the community by giving ideas for making health programs better.
Keeping Records:
- Write down important information about people’s health in a clear and organized way.
- Keep track of health activities and share information with your team.
- Make sure all health reports are correct and follow rules and safety standards.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
To do this job well, you will need to have some special skills. These are important to help you succeed:
- Nursing Knowledge: You should know how to help people with basic health care, like giving shots, checking health, and helping them when they’re sick.
- Good Communication: You will need to talk clearly with people and explain health tips in simple words so everyone understands.
- Caring Attitude: You need to be kind and understanding when talking to people from different backgrounds.
- Organizing Skills: You should be able to keep track of many different tasks and make sure everything is done on time.
- Problem Solving: You will need to think of ways to help people and solve health problems in your community.
- Teamwork: You will be working with others, so being a good team player is important.
Preferred Skills:
These skills are not required, but they will help you stand out and could make your application even stronger:
- Speaking Another Language: If you can speak Spanish or another language, it will help you talk to more people in the community.
- Experience in Public Health: If you have worked in health care before, especially with public health programs, that’s a plus.
- Tech Skills: Knowing how to use computers or health software will help you do your job better and faster.
- Leadership: If you can lead activities or teach others about health, that’s a great skill to have.
Education and Experience
To apply for this job, you need the following education and experience:
- Education: You need to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). If you have a degree in nursing, that’s a great start!
- License: You must be a Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas. This means you need to have passed the test to become a nurse in Texas. If you are still working on this, talk to us about your options.
- Experience: It’s helpful if you have worked as a nurse before, but even if you haven’t, we still encourage you to apply! We also welcome new nurses who are excited to work in public health.

Salary and Benefits
At Public Health Services, we want to make sure you are happy and well taken care of. Here is what we offer:
- Salary: The pay for this job is between $55,000 and $75,000 per year. Your pay will depend on your experience.
