Job Summary

Responsibilities
As a Public Health Nurse, you will do many important tasks every day. Here are some of the things you will be responsible for:
1. Teaching People About Health
- Talk to people about how to stay healthy, avoid sickness, and live a good lifestyle.
- Help schools and community centers by teaching classes about health and hygiene.
- Give out health tips and advice to people in your community.
2. Preventing Sickness
- Give people vaccines to prevent diseases like flu, COVID-19, and more.
- Check people for illnesses by doing health screenings (like checking for high blood pressure or diabetes).
- Teach the community how to stop the spread of sickness.
3. Taking Care of People
- Help people who are sick by giving them medicine or taking care of wounds.
- Check how people are feeling and give them the right care.
- Help people with long-term illnesses like diabetes, so they can stay healthy.
4. Working with the Community
- Work with local organizations to help make the community healthier.
- Help make sure that everyone has the health care they need.
- Meet with other health workers to share ideas on how to improve the health of the community.
Qualifications
What You Need to Be Good at:
To be a good Public Health Nurse, you should have these skills:
- Communication: You must be able to talk to people clearly and kindly. This includes talking to both adults and children.
- Caring and Empathy: You will meet people who need help, so it’s important to be kind and caring.
- Paying Attention to Detail: You need to notice little things when helping patients, like checking for signs of illness or giving the right medicine.
- Teamwork: You will work with doctors, nurses, and other helpers. You need to be a team player.
- Problem Solving: You will sometimes need to figure out what’s wrong with a patient and decide how to help them.
What’s Nice to Have:
While not required, it’s great if you have these skills:
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you speak both English and Spanish, it can help you talk to more people in your community.
- Experience in Public Health: If you’ve worked in health care or in the community before, that’s great, but it’s okay if you’re new to this type of job.
- Knowing Local Health Services: If you know about health programs in Houston or Harris County, it will help you assist people better.
Education and Experience
What You Need:
- Education: You need to have finished nursing school and have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- License: You must have a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license from Texas.
- Experience: At least 2 years of nursing experience, especially if you’ve worked in public health or with communities, is helpful.
Extra Experience That Helps:
- If you have worked in health care that focuses on teaching, preventing sickness, or helping the community, that’s great!
- If you have certifications like CPR or First Aid, it’s a plus.
