Job Summary
As a Public Health Epidemiologist, your main job will be to study health problems in our community. This means looking at information about diseases, figuring out how they spread, and helping create plans to stop them. You will also help teach others how to stay healthy and prevent diseases. Your work will help everyone in San Diego County live healthier lives.
Responsibilities
Here are some of the things you will do as a Public Health Epidemiologist:
1. Study Health Data
You will look at information about diseases and health problems in the community. You will check how diseases spread and find out who is most at risk.
2. Write Reports
You will write reports to explain your findings. You will need to share your information with doctors, public health officials, and the community. Your reports will help people understand what is happening and what they can do to stay healthy.
3. Work with Others
You will work with doctors, health officials, and other people to help stop the spread of diseases. Working as a team will help you make better decisions to keep the community safe.
4. Help with Health Programs
You will help create and support health programs that teach people how to stay healthy and avoid getting sick. These programs might be about preventing the flu, eating healthy, or staying active.
5. Respond to Emergencies
If there is a disease outbreak or emergency, you will help figure out how to stop it from spreading. You will work with others to keep people informed and safe.
6. Evaluate Programs
You will check to see if the health programs are working. If something isn’t working well, you will suggest ways to improve it.
Qualifications
Required Skills
To do this job, you will need the following skills:
- Good with numbers: You will need to understand and use numbers to look at health data and see what is happening.
- Clear Communication: You will need to explain your findings in reports and presentations. You should be able to talk to both experts and regular people about health issues.
- Attention to Detail: You will need to pay close attention to your work so you can find the right answers.
- Problem-Solving: You will need to come up with solutions to help solve health problems in the community.
- Teamwork: You will work with other people, so being a good team player is very important.
Preferred Skills
It would be helpful if you have these skills too:
- Experience with Data Tools: If you know how to use tools like Excel or other software to look at health data, it will be helpful.
- Knowledge of Health: If you have studied public health or worked in healthcare before, that’s a big plus!
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you speak Spanish or another language, it would be great for working with a diverse community.
- Project Management: If you have experience organizing projects or programs, it will help you be successful in this role.
Education and Experience
Education
- You need at least a Bachelor’s degree in something like public health, science, or statistics.
- If you have a Master’s degree in Public Health or Epidemiology, that’s even better!
Experience
- You should have at least two years of experience working in public health or a similar field.
- It’s also helpful if you have worked with health data or have experience writing reports.

Salary and Benefits
