What is the Job About?
As a Child Protection Specialist, your job is to keep children safe. You will help families who need support and make sure that children are not being hurt or neglected. You will also work with other professionals, like doctors, teachers, and police officers, to help protect kids.
Here are some of the things you will do in this job:
- Look into Complaints: Sometimes people report that a child might be in danger. You will look into these reports to see if a child is being hurt or neglected.
- Create Safety Plans: If a child is at risk, you will work with the family to create a safety plan. This plan might include getting the child help from other services or teaching the family how to take better care of the child.
- Work with Other People: You will work closely with doctors, police, and social workers to make sure the child gets all the help they need. It’s important that everyone works together.
- Check on Families: After making a safety plan, you will follow up with the family to make sure things are getting better and the child is safe.
- Help Children: You will always make sure that the child’s safety is the most important thing. You might help a judge or other people make decisions about what happens to the child.
- Keep Good Records: It’s important to write down everything you do. This helps keep track of what happens in each case.
What Skills Do You Need?
To be a Child Protection Specialist, you need to have certain skills. Here’s what we are looking for:
Skills You Must Have
- Good Communication: You need to be able to talk clearly and listen carefully to children, parents, and other professionals. You should be kind but also clear when explaining things.
- Problem-Solving: Sometimes, situations can be complicated. You will need to think of the best ways to solve problems and help the families you work with.
- Stay Calm: Working with children who are in danger can be hard. You must be able to stay calm and focused on what needs to be done.
- Attention to Detail: It’s very important that you remember all the details about each case. This helps you keep children safe and helps the family get the right support.
- Teamwork: You will be working with a lot of different people. It’s important that you know how to work well with others to help the children.
Skills That Are a Plus
- Experience Helping Kids: If you have worked with kids or in social work before, that’s helpful, but it’s not required.
- Understand Different Cultures: San Diego has many different types of families. Being open-minded and understanding different cultures is helpful.
- Speak Another Language: If you can speak Spanish or another language, it’s a big plus! This will help you communicate with more families.
What Education and Experience Do You Need?
Education
- You need to have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a similar subject.
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work or a related subject is nice but not required.
Experience
- We prefer that you have at least one year of experience working with children or in a job that helps families. This could be anything from working as a teacher to helping in a community center.
- You also need a driver’s license and a car to travel around San Diego County.
