Job Summary
As a Medical Assistant (MA) in the Refugee Health program, you will help take care of refugees in our community. You will work with doctors and nurses to provide the best care for patients. Your job will be important because you will help people who have faced many challenges in their lives. Every day, you will have the chance to make someone feel better and support them in their health journey.
Responsibilities
As a Medical Assistant, your daily tasks will include:
- Helping Patients: You will help doctors and nurses during patient exams and treatments. This includes checking patients’ vital signs, like their heart rate and temperature, and making sure they are comfortable.
- Keeping Records: You will write down important information about patients’ health and keep their records safe. This is important to make sure everyone gets the right care.
- Scheduling Appointments: You will help set up and manage appointments for patients so they can see a doctor when they need to.
- Educating Patients: You will give patients information about how to stay healthy and what they need to do to take care of themselves.
- Office Work: You will do some office tasks, like answering phones, filing papers, and keeping track of medical supplies.
- Teamwork: You will work closely with doctors, nurses, and other staff to make sure all patients get great care.
Qualifications
Required Skills
To do this job well, you should have the following skills:
- Good Communication: You need to talk and listen well. It’s important to understand what patients need and explain things clearly.
- Kindness: You should be friendly and caring because you will be working with people who might be feeling scared or sick.
- Organization: You need to keep things neat and orderly, especially patient records and appointment schedules.
- Basic Medical Knowledge: You should know some basic medical terms and procedures.
- Comfort with Technology: You should feel comfortable using computers and health record systems.
Preferred Skills
These skills are not required, but they would be helpful:
- Bilingual Skills: If you can speak another language, like Spanish or Arabic, it can help you communicate better with patients.
- Healthcare Experience: If you have worked in healthcare before, that’s a plus, but it’s okay if you haven’t.
- Cultural Understanding: Being aware and respectful of different cultures is important, especially when working with refugees.
Education and Experience

- Education: A high school diploma or similar is required. It’s even better if you have completed a training program for medical assistants.
- Experience: If you have worked in a healthcare setting before, that’s great, but it’s not necessary.
