Job Summary

As a Behavioral Health Consultant, your main job will be to help people who are having trouble with their mental health. This can include helping them with anxiety, depression, or other emotional problems. You’ll talk to people, listen to their problems, and help them figure out what support they need.

You will work closely with other professionals, like doctors, social workers, and nurses, to help people feel better. You will also create plans for how people can improve their mental health and get the support they need.

Responsibilities

Here are some of the important things you will do in this job:

• Talking to People and Listening: You’ll talk to people who need help and listen to their problems. This helps you understand what they are going through and how you can help.
• Creating a Plan to Help: After talking to someone, you’ll come up with a plan to help them. This could include things like therapy, counseling, or connecting them to other services they need.
• Providing Therapy: Sometimes, you will talk to people one-on-one or in groups to help them understand and manage their feelings. You may also talk to families to help them understand how they can support their loved one.
• Working with a Team: You will work with other people like doctors, nurses, and social workers. Together, you will help people get the care they need.
• Keeping Good Records: You will need to keep notes about the work you do with people. This is important for making sure everyone knows what help was given and what comes next.
• Helping in Emergencies: Sometimes people might need help right away. You will be trained to step in and help during an emergency to make sure people are safe.
• Teaching and Educating: You might also go out into the community to teach people about mental health. This can help people understand how to take care of their mental health and what services are available.

Qualifications

To do this job well, there are certain skills and experiences you need. Here’s what we are looking for:

Required Skills:

• Good Communication: You need to be able to talk to people in a kind and clear way. You should be a good listener and able to explain things simply so everyone understands.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Sometimes you will need to think of ways to help people feel better. This means being good at finding solutions when things are tough.
• Cultural Awareness: San Diego is a very diverse city. You should be able to work with people from different backgrounds and understand their needs.
• Confidentiality: You will learn personal things about people, so you must keep their information private and respect their privacy.
• Knowledge of Mental Health: It’s important to understand mental health problems and how to help people who have them. The more you know, the better you can help!
• Teamwork: You will work with other people, so you must be able to cooperate and be part of a team.

Preferred Skills:

• Crisis Experience: If you have experience helping people in an emergency or stressful situation, that’s great!
• Bilingual (Spanish): It’s helpful if you speak Spanish since many people in San Diego speak it. This will help you communicate with more people.
• Community Outreach Experience: If you have experience talking to groups or educating people about mental health, that’s a plus!

Education and Experience

Required Education:

• You need a Bachelor’s degree (4 years of college) in something like social work, psychology, or counseling. A Master’s degree (extra years of college) is even better!

Required Experience:

• You should have at least 2 years of experience working in a job where you help people with mental health or other problems.
• You should also have a valid license in your field. This shows you are qualified to help people in California.
