Job Summary

The Senior Behavioral Health Counselor will help people who have mental health problems or struggle with addiction. You will talk with clients, listen to their problems, and help them find ways to feel better. You will also guide other counselors who are just starting their careers and help them learn.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Behavioral Health Counselor, you will have several important responsibilities, including:

1. Talk to Clients

You will talk one-on-one with people who need help with their mental health. You will listen to their problems, help them understand what’s going on, and give them advice on how to improve.

2. Work with Groups

Sometimes, you will help groups of people who are going through similar problems. You will help the group talk to each other, share their experiences, and support one another.

3. Make Treatment Plans

You will create a special plan for each client to help them feel better. This plan will include what kind of support they need and how they can work through their challenges.

4. Assess and Check Progress

You will ask questions and do tests to understand how each person is doing. This will help you see if their treatment is working or if it needs to be changed.

5. Support Other Counselors

You will also help teach and guide other counselors who are newer to the job. You will show them how to help clients, and give them tips on how to be better at their work.

6. Work with Other Healthcare Professionals

You will work closely with other doctors, nurses, and social workers to make sure your clients get the best care possible. You will all share information to help the client get the right support.

7. Help in Crisis Situations

Sometimes, people may be in a crisis or a dangerous situation. You will need to step in and help them feel safe, calm down, and get the right help quickly.

8. Keep Records

You will keep detailed notes about what happens during therapy sessions and how your clients are improving. This is important for tracking their progress and helping other team members understand the care they are receiving.

9. Help the Community

You will sometimes teach people in the community about mental health. You will share information to help people understand mental health better and reduce the stigma or fear around it.

Qualifications

To be a Senior Behavioral Health Counselor, you need certain skills and experiences:

Required Skills:

• Licensing: You need to have a special license to be a counselor, such as being a licensed social worker or therapist (LCSW, LMFT, or LPCC). You need at least 3 years of experience working in the mental health field.
• Good Communication Skills: You need to be good at talking to people, explaining things in a clear way, and listening carefully to what others say.
• Experience Helping People with Mental Health: You should have experience helping people with mental health issues, like depression, anxiety, or substance abuse problems.
• Crisis Management: You need to know how to handle emergency situations and help people when they are upset or in danger.
• Ability to Teach and Lead: You will be guiding and helping other counselors. You should be comfortable teaching and giving feedback to others.

Preferred Skills:

These are skills that will help you in this job, but they are not required:

• Working with People Who Have Both Mental Health and Substance Abuse Problems: If you have worked with people who have both mental health problems and addiction issues, that’s a big plus.
• Knowing About Local Resources: It will be helpful if you know about the community programs and resources in San Diego, like crisis centers or addiction recovery programs.
• Speaking Other Languages: If you speak Spanish or another language, that would be very helpful because San Diego has a diverse community.

Education and Experience

You will need the following education and experience to apply:

• Education: You must have a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW), Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT), or Psychology.
• Licensing: You need to have a valid license in social work, marriage and family therapy, or professional counseling.
• Experience: You should have at least three (3) years of experience in a counseling role, helping people with mental health or addiction issues.
