The Health & Human Services Agency is looking for a Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Job Summary
As a Long-Term Care Ombudsman, your job will be to help and speak up for people who live in nursing homes, assisted living homes, and other long-term care places. You will listen to their problems, help solve any issues, and make sure their rights are respected.
You will visit these homes, talk to the residents, their families, and the workers at the care facilities, and help make sure everyone is treated fairly. You will also make sure that the homes follow the rules to keep the residents safe and happy.
Responsibilities
Here are some of the things you will do in this job:
- Help Residents: You will be the person to talk to if someone has a problem or complaint about the care they are getting. You will listen to them and help fix the problem.
- Investigate Complaints: If someone tells you they are not being treated well, you will look into it. This might mean visiting the care home and talking to the people involved to find out what happened.
- Educate Residents and Families: You will teach people who live in care homes and their families about their rights. You will also tell them about resources or help they can get.
- Visit Care Homes: You will go to different nursing homes and care facilities to make sure everything is okay. You will check that the homes are following the rules to keep the residents safe and comfortable.
- Work with Others: You will talk to the workers at the care homes and other people who can help solve problems. You will work together to make sure the residents are treated well.
- Keep Records: You will keep track of the complaints you hear, what you find out, and how you solve problems. This is important so that everything stays organized.
Qualifications
For this job, we are looking for someone who has these skills and qualities:
Required Skills:
- Good Communication: You need to talk to different people in a clear way. You should be able to listen carefully to what people are saying and explain things so they can understand.
- Helping People: You should care about helping people who need support, especially older adults or people with disabilities.
- Problem-Solving: You need to be able to think of good solutions to problems. If someone has a complaint, you should be able to figure out how to fix it.
- Kindness and Empathy: It’s important to be kind and show that you care about the people you are helping. You will be working with people who may be feeling upset, so it’s important to be understanding.
- Attention to Detail: You will need to pay attention to the details when you visit homes or investigate complaints. This helps make sure everything is done right.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience Helping Others: If you have worked with older adults or in a healthcare setting before, that’s a bonus.
- Speaking More Than One Language: If you can speak more than one language, it will help you talk to more people.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need to have at least a high school diploma or a similar qualification. However, if you have a degree or training in social work or healthcare, that would be helpful.
- Experience: Ideally, you should have at least 1-2 years of experience working with people, especially older adults or people who need special care. If you have experience in healthcare or social services, that’s a plus.
Location
This job is based in the County of San Diego, California. You will travel to different care homes in the area, but most of your work will be in San Diego County. You will be reimbursed for travel expenses.
