Job Summary
As an HIV Prevention Specialist, your job is to help teach people about HIV and how to avoid getting it. You will talk to people in the community, lead classes and workshops, and work with local groups to share important information. You will also help people who might be at risk of HIV by connecting them with the right resources, like testing and treatments.
Your work will help stop the spread of HIV and make sure people in San Diego County are informed and healthy. You will be helping individuals, families, and the whole community lead healthier lives.
Responsibilities
Here’s what you’ll be doing in this job:
- Teaching and educating: You will talk to groups of people and teach them about HIV, how it spreads, and how to prevent it. You might give presentations at schools, health events, or local organizations. You’ll also make easy-to-understand materials about HIV prevention that people can read and use.
- Outreach and community work: You will visit local places like clinics, schools, and community centers to talk to people. You will also help organize health events and fairs where people can get information about HIV and other health topics.
- Helping people directly: You’ll provide information to people who are worried about HIV or need help finding the right services. You might help people get an HIV test or find medical treatment.
- Keeping track of your work: You will track how well the programs and activities you’re working on are going. You will also make reports to share what’s been accomplished and how the community is benefiting.
- Working with others: You’ll work closely with local doctors, health workers, and other community groups to help people get the services and support they need.
- Advocating for better health policies: You’ll help make sure that policies and laws in the community support better HIV prevention and health care.
Qualifications
To do this job well, you need these skills:
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of HIV: You should know what HIV is, how it spreads, and what people can do to avoid getting it. You don’t have to be an expert, but you should be willing to learn and teach others.
- Good communication skills: You need to be able to talk clearly and explain things in a way that everyone can understand. You’ll be speaking to many different people, including those who might not know much about HIV.
- Helping people: You should enjoy working with people and helping them. This could be talking to a large group or one person at a time.
- Organization skills: You will have many tasks to do, so it’s important to stay organized and keep track of what needs to be done.
- Confidentiality: You’ll be talking to people about their health, so you need to respect their privacy and keep information private.
Preferred Skills:
- Speaking another language: If you speak Spanish or another language that people in the community use, it will help you reach more people and make a bigger impact.
- Experience working with people: It’s helpful if you’ve worked in schools, community centers, or any job where you help people learn about health or safety.
Education and Experience
Required Education:
- You need at least a high school diploma or something similar.
- If you’ve taken classes about health, social work, or public education, that’s a bonus.
Required Experience:
- You should have some experience working with people in your community, especially if you’ve helped with health or educational activities before.
Location: County of San Diego, CA
This job will be in San Diego County, California. You will work in different places around the county, like health clinics, schools, and community events. You might have to travel a little bit, so you’ll need to have a way to get around.
