The Health & Human Services Agency is looking for an Emergency Response Planner to join our team in San Diego County, CA. As an Emergency Response Planner, your job is to help make sure San Diego County is ready for any emergency. You will work with other organizations and government agencies to plan what should happen if there’s a disaster or emergency. You will also help create ways for the county to recover after an emergency, so people can get back to their normal lives quickly.
You will make emergency plans, work with other teams, and make sure everyone is prepared to respond if something bad happens. The safety of the community will depend on your planning and coordination!
As an Emergency Response Planner, your daily tasks will include the following:
You will help create emergency plans for the county. This includes figuring out what might happen in an emergency and making sure the county is ready. Whether it’s a fire, a flood, or a health crisis, you will plan for all kinds of situations.
You will work with many other groups, like the fire department, police, hospitals, and even state and national organizations. This teamwork is important to make sure everyone is on the same page during an emergency.
You will look at the risks and dangers in the county to see which areas need more attention. For example, are there places more likely to flood? You will help come up with ways to make those areas safer.
If an emergency happens, you will help make sure the plans you’ve made are used. You will coordinate the teams to make sure people are safe and that the situation is handled as quickly and calmly as possible.
You will help keep the public informed. This might mean making announcements on the news or through social media to tell people what to do during an emergency.
You will also be responsible for helping train emergency response teams. You will organize practice drills and make sure everyone knows what to do in case of a real emergency.
After an emergency happens, you will write reports about what worked well and what could be improved. This helps everyone learn and do better next time.
You will make sure that the emergency plans follow all the laws and rules. There are special rules for handling emergencies, and you will help make sure everything is done the right way.

To be an Emergency Response Planner, you need at least a Bachelor’s degree. This means you need to have finished college or university. Your degree can be in fields like Emergency Management, Public Health, Environmental Science, or anything related to helping during emergencies. If you don’t have a degree in one of these fields but have experience working in emergency services, you can still apply.
You should have at least two years of experience in a job that involves emergency planning, safety, or public service. For example, if you’ve worked with first responders, public health, or safety teams before, that experience will be helpful.
