Job Summary
As an Emergency Response Planner, your job is to help make sure San Diego County is ready for any emergency. You will work with other organizations and government agencies to plan what should happen if there’s a disaster or emergency. You will also help create ways for the county to recover after an emergency, so people can get back to their normal lives quickly.
You will make emergency plans, work with other teams, and make sure everyone is prepared to respond if something bad happens. The safety of the community will depend on your planning and coordination!
Responsibilities
As an Emergency Response Planner, your daily tasks will include the following:
1. Making Emergency Plans
You will help create emergency plans for the county. This includes figuring out what might happen in an emergency and making sure the county is ready. Whether it’s a fire, a flood, or a health crisis, you will plan for all kinds of situations.
2. Working with Other Agencies
You will work with many other groups, like the fire department, police, hospitals, and even state and national organizations. This teamwork is important to make sure everyone is on the same page during an emergency.
3. Checking for Risks
You will look at the risks and dangers in the county to see which areas need more attention. For example, are there places more likely to flood? You will help come up with ways to make those areas safer.
4. Helping During an Emergency
If an emergency happens, you will help make sure the plans you’ve made are used. You will coordinate the teams to make sure people are safe and that the situation is handled as quickly and calmly as possible.
5. Communicating with the Public
You will help keep the public informed. This might mean making announcements on the news or through social media to tell people what to do during an emergency.
6. Training People
You will also be responsible for helping train emergency response teams. You will organize practice drills and make sure everyone knows what to do in case of a real emergency.
7. Writing Reports
After an emergency happens, you will write reports about what worked well and what could be improved. This helps everyone learn and do better next time.
8. Following the Rules
You will make sure that the emergency plans follow all the laws and rules. There are special rules for handling emergencies, and you will help make sure everything is done the right way.
Qualifications
Required Skills

- Good Time Management – You will need to manage your time carefully. Sometimes you will have to work on different projects, and being able to finish your tasks on time is important.
Preferred Skills
These skills are not required but would be helpful:
- Knowledge of Maps and Data – If you know how to read maps or work with data, it will be easier for you to plan and find risks in different areas.
- Experience Leading Projects – If you’ve ever helped lead a project or event, that experience can help you in this role.
- Understanding of Emergency Plans – If you already know about how emergency response works (like the Incident Command System), that’s a plus!
- Speaking Another Language – If you can speak more than one language, you can help even more people during an emergency.
Education and Experience
Education
To be an Emergency Response Planner, you need at least a Bachelor’s degree. This means you need to have finished college or university. Your degree can be in fields like Emergency Management, Public Health, Environmental Science, or anything related to helping during emergencies. If you don’t have a degree in one of these fields but have experience working in emergency services, you can still apply.
Experience
You should have at least two years of experience in a job that involves emergency planning, safety, or public service. For example, if you’ve worked with first responders, public health, or safety teams before, that experience will be helpful.
Location
This job is located in San Diego County, CA. San Diego is a beautiful place with lots of sunshine, beaches, and great weather. It’s a big, busy area, and it’s a place where planning for emergencies is very important to keep everyone safe.
Salary and Benefits

- Salary: The salary for this job is between $70,000 – $90,000 a year. The amount you earn depends on how much experience you have.
