What is a Community Health Worker?
As a Community Health Worker with us, you will work directly with people in your community. Your job is to talk to people about staying healthy, connect them with doctors or clinics if they need help, and show them how to make healthier choices.

Job Responsibilities
As a Community Health Worker, here’s what you will do each day:
Helping People Understand Health Information
- Share information on how to stay healthy, like eating well, exercising, and getting regular check-ups.
- Explain why things like vaccines, check-ups, and healthy habits are important.
- Help people learn about local health centers, hospitals, and clinics they can visit if they need help.
Supporting Community Members
- Assist community members with tasks like making health appointments, filling out forms, and understanding health instructions.
- Build friendly relationships so people feel comfortable asking you for help or advice.
- Work with doctors, nurses, and other health workers to support families, children, and elderly individuals in the community.
Gathering and Sharing Important Information
- Keep track of how many people attend health classes or what health issues are most common.
- Write down your conversations to keep records of how you’ve helped.
- Share feedback with Public Health Services to help us improve our community programs.
Helping People Get Access to Resources
- Act as a link between people in the community and health providers so that everyone can access essential health services.
- Guide people to resources like food assistance programs, mental health support, or family planning options.
- Assist community members in finding help for specific needs, such as housing support or nutritional programs.
Skills and Qualities Needed
To be successful in this job, you’ll need a few key skills and qualities:
Required Skills
- Clear Communication: Speak in a way that is easy to understand and patient, so that everyone can follow along.
- Problem Solving: Think of solutions when people need help with finding the right resources or understanding health information.
- Empathy and Kindness: Care about others and be willing to go the extra mile to support them.
Preferred Skills
- Bilingual Skills: Knowing a second language like Spanish is helpful but not required.
- Familiarity with Harris County: It’s helpful if you know a little about the local health resources and community centers in Harris County.
Education and Experience
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification: While not required, having a Community Health Worker certification is helpful.
- Experience: Any past experience in community work or a health-related field is a plus, but we welcome applicants who are eager to learn.
Job Location
This role is based in Harris County, Houston, Texas. You’ll work directly in different neighborhoods, community centers, and sometimes local health facilities. You’ll be out in the community, meeting with people and offering health support.
