Job Summary
As a Medical Social Worker, your main job will be to help patients and their families deal with health problems. You will talk with patients and their families to understand what they need and help them find ways to get the support they need. You will also work with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers to make sure the patients get the right care.
You will help people understand their health conditions, provide emotional support, and guide them through difficult decisions. This is a rewarding job because you will be making a big difference in people’s lives.
Responsibilities
Here are the main things you will do as a Medical Social Worker:
- Talk to patients and their families: You will listen to what patients and families are going through and help them figure out what kind of support they need.
- Give emotional support: Sometimes people feel sad or scared when they are sick. You will talk to them, help them feel better, and give them comfort.
- Help people understand their health: You will explain things about their health, help them understand their treatment, and answer any questions they have.
- Connect people to services: If patients need help with things like food, housing, or financial support, you will help them find the right resources.
- Work with doctors and nurses: You will talk with healthcare teams to make sure patients get the best care.
- Create care plans: You will help plan how patients can get better and what help they need after they leave the hospital or doctor’s office.
- Keep track of progress: You will write down important information about patients’ care to keep everything organized and make sure they are improving.
- Support families: You will help families cope with changes and difficult situations that come with being sick or having a loved one in the hospital.
Your job is to make sure that people feel cared for, understood, and supported during a difficult time.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
To do this job well, you will need the following skills:
- Good at talking to people: You need to be a good listener and able to explain things in a way people can understand.
- Kind and caring: You should enjoy helping others and be patient with people who are going through tough times.
- Problem-solving: You will need to think of ways to help people with different problems.
- Respect for privacy: You will learn private information about patients, and it’s very important to keep everything confidential.
- Understanding healthcare: You don’t need to be a doctor, but knowing some basic medical terms and how healthcare works will help.
- Time management: Sometimes you will have a lot to do, so you need to be good at organizing your tasks.
Preferred Skills:
These skills are not required but would be helpful:
- Speaking another language: If you speak more than one language, like Spanish, it will be helpful for communicating with more people.
- Previous experience in social work: If you’ve worked with people before, especially in a healthcare setting, it’s a big plus.
- Knowing local resources: If you know where to find help for things like food, housing, or financial aid, that’s a helpful skill.
- Handling emergencies: If you have experience helping people in urgent situations, that will be useful in this job.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need to have a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW). This is a degree that teaches you how to help people and understand their problems.
- Experience: Ideally, you should have at least one year of experience helping people in healthcare or social services. If you don’t have a lot of experience but are eager to learn, we will still consider you.
- License: You need to have a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license or be able to get it soon after you start the job.

Salary and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary based on your experience. The salary range is between $65,000 and $85,000 per year.
