Job Summary
As a Public Health Inspector, your main job is to make sure places are clean and safe for people. You’ll go around to different businesses and public spaces, like restaurants and swimming pools, to check if they follow health rules. If you find something that’s not safe, you’ll help fix it so everyone stays healthy.
You’ll also talk to people to teach them how to follow the health rules. Your job will help stop things like sicknesses from spreading.
Responsibilities
In this job, you’ll have many important tasks. Here’s what you will do:
- Check Places for Health Rules: You will visit businesses, restaurants, and public places to make sure they follow health rules.
- Look for Problems: If you find things that could make people sick, like dirty places or broken equipment, you will report it and ask them to fix it.
- Talk to People About Health: You will teach business owners and workers how to stay clean and safe. You will show them how to follow the health rules.
- Answer Complaints: If someone says a place is unsafe or dirty, you will check it out and help fix the problem.
- Write Reports: After you do your inspections, you will write down what you found and what needs to be fixed.
- Work with Others: You will work with other teams, like city officials, to keep people safe and healthy.
- Help in Emergencies: If there’s an outbreak of sickness or another emergency, you’ll help make sure everyone stays safe and clean.
Qualifications
To be a Public Health Inspector, here’s what we are looking for:
Required Skills:
- Good Eyesight and Attention to Detail: You need to look carefully at places and notice if anything is wrong.
- Problem-Solving Skills: You’ll need to think of ways to fix problems and make sure places follow the rules.
- Great Communication: You need to explain things clearly so people understand what they need to do.
- Friendly and Helpful: You should be able to talk to people nicely and help them without being rude.
- Knowledge of Health Rules: You need to understand basic health and safety rules to make sure businesses follow them.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in Health or Safety: If you have worked in a health-related job before, that’s a plus!
- Knowledge of Local Rules: If you know the health rules for San Diego County, that’s helpful but not required.
- Basic Computer Skills: You should be able to use a computer to keep track of your work.
Education and Experience
To get this job, you need:
- Education: You must have finished high school. If you have taken any classes about health or science, that’s great!
- Experience: If you have worked in a job where you checked for safety or cleanliness, that’s helpful. But if you don’t have that experience, don’t worry — we can train you!
- Certification: After you are hired, you may need to get a special certificate called a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS). This helps show you know the rules for public health.
