Job Summary
As a Maternal & Child Health Specialist, your job will be to help improve the health of moms and kids in San Diego County. You will work with other healthcare professionals, community groups, and families to make sure mothers and children get the best care. You will also help provide health education, answer questions, and help families find resources.
Your job is important because you will help make sure all families, no matter where they come from, have the chance to be healthy. You will also help find ways to make health programs better.
Key Responsibilities
As a Maternal & Child Health Specialist, you will have many important duties. Some of your main responsibilities will include:
1. Planning Health Programs
- Help plan programs that teach mothers and families how to stay healthy.
- Work with doctors, nurses, and other groups to make sure everyone has access to the help they need.
- Check if the health programs are working and make them better when needed.
2. Teaching Families About Health
- Visit families in the community and talk to them about how to stay healthy during pregnancy, after childbirth, and as children grow.
- Give talks and lessons on important topics like healthy eating, exercise, vaccinations, and taking care of babies.
- Make sure the programs are helpful to all families, no matter where they come from.
3. Helping Families Find Resources
- Help moms and families find doctors, health clinics, and other important resources they need.
- Connect families to services like food assistance, mental health support, and financial help.
- Be a helpful guide to make sure families know where to go for the care they need.
4. Collecting Information
- Gather information about how well health programs are working in the community.
- Look at health problems in different parts of San Diego County and try to find ways to fix them.
- Write reports and share ideas to make health programs better.
Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you should have the following skills:
Required Skills:
- Knowledge about Maternal & Child Health: You should know a lot about how to take care of moms and kids, especially those who need extra help.
- Good Communication Skills: You will need to talk to a lot of people, so it’s important to be a good listener and talk clearly. You will also need to write reports and explain things in a way that’s easy to understand.
- Friendly and Compassionate: It’s important to be kind and caring when you work with families. You should always treat people with respect and be a good helper.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Sometimes, you will need to figure out how to solve problems or find new ways to help families get the care they need.
- Understanding Different Cultures: San Diego County has many different kinds of people. You should be able to understand and respect the cultures of the families you work with.
Preferred Skills:
- Speaking Another Language: If you can speak another language, like Spanish or Tagalog, it’s a big plus because it will help you communicate with more families.
- Experience in Health: It’s helpful if you have worked in health programs before, especially with moms and kids.
- Leadership: If you have experience leading groups or teaching others, that would be great!
Education and Experience
Education:
- You need a Bachelor’s Degree (a 4-year college degree) in a subject like Public Health, Nursing, Social Work, or Health Education. If you have a Master’s Degree, that’s even better, but it’s not required.
Experience:
- You need at least 2-3 years of experience working in health programs or with families. It’s especially helpful if you’ve worked with moms and kids before.
Location
This job is located in San Diego County, California. You may need to travel around the county to meet families and help with health programs, but you will mostly work in the San Diego area.
