Job Summary
As a Public Health Epidemiology Specialist, you will be a key person who looks at health data to find out how diseases spread. You’ll work with other health experts to understand why certain health problems happen and what we can do to stop them. This job is really important because it helps people stay healthy and avoid getting sick.
Your work will include studying health problems, finding patterns in disease, and making plans to help people. You’ll also teach others how to stay healthy and prevent illness.
Responsibilities
As a Public Health Epidemiology Specialist, you will do many important tasks to help your community:
Analyzing Health Data
- Look at health information: You will collect and study information about diseases and health problems in San Diego County.
- Make reports: After looking at the data, you will write reports to explain what you found. You will tell others what is happening with health in the area and what we should do about it.
Tracking and Studying Diseases
- Watch for outbreaks: You will help track when diseases spread, like flu or other sicknesses. If a disease is spreading too much, you will help figure out why and what we can do to stop it.
- Investigate problems: If there is an outbreak, you will help find out where it started and how to control it.
Teaching People About Health
- Help teach others: You will help teach people how to stay healthy and avoid getting sick. You might create posters, videos, or even give talks to explain how to stay safe from diseases.
- Work with others: You will work with hospitals, schools, and other organizations to spread important health information.
Helping Create Health Programs
- Make health programs: You will help design programs that teach people how to stay healthy and prevent disease.
- Check if the programs are working: After the programs are started, you will check to see if they are helping people stay healthy. If something isn’t working, you will help improve it.

- Good at looking at numbers: You should be able to study health data and figure out what it means.

- Teamwork: You will work with other health experts, so being a good team player is important.
- Attention to detail: You will need to notice small details in health data to spot any problems or trends.
Preferred Skills
These skills are not required, but they would be helpful:
- Experience in public health: If you have worked in public health before, it will be easier to do this job.
- Speaking another language: If you can speak more than one language, it will help you talk to more people in the community.
- Experience with health education: If you have helped teach others about health before, that’s a big plus!
Education and Experience
To be a Public Health Epidemiology Specialist, you need the following:
- A Bachelor’s degree: You need to have finished college with a degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or something similar. If you have a degree in another subject but studied health topics, that can also work.
- Experience: You need at least 2 years of experience working in public health or a related field. This can include internships or volunteering in health-related jobs.
- Advanced degree (optional): If you have a higher degree, like a Master’s in Public Health, that is helpful, but it’s not required.
