What Does an MRI Technologist Do?
As an MRI Technologist, your job will be to work with MRI machines. These machines take pictures of the inside of the body, which help doctors figure out what is happening inside. Here are the key things you’ll do in your role:
- Help Prepare Patients: Before the MRI scan, you will explain to the patient how the process works and help them get ready for the scan. It’s important that they feel comfortable and understand what will happen.
- Operate MRI Machines: You will use the MRI machine to take detailed pictures of the inside of a patient’s body. This equipment is very important for doctors to see and understand what might be wrong with the patient.
- Work with Doctors and Nurses: You’ll work with doctors and nurses to help patients and make sure everything goes smoothly. If the doctors need more pictures or a clearer view, you’ll know how to help.
- Follow Safety Rules: Safety is the most important part of this job. You will always follow safety rules to make sure patients and staff are safe. You’ll also make sure the MRI machine is working properly and safely.

Job Requirements:
- Education:
- You need to have at least a 2-year Associate’s degree (which is a degree you get after high school). It’s best if you have graduated from a program approved by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or a program that teaches you about MRI machines.
- Experience:
- It’s helpful if you have worked with MRI machines before, but it’s not a must. If you have at least one year of experience, that’s great!
- Certifications:
- You need to have the ARRT certification in MRI. If you don’t have it yet, you will need to get it within 6 months of starting the job.
- You also need to have an IV certification, which means you will be allowed to give patients medicine through an IV (a tube in their arm).
- Your state license (if required) to work in healthcare needs to be up to date.
Skills You Need:
- MRI Knowledge: You should know how MRI machines work and how to use them to take pictures safely.
- Basic Computer Skills: You need to be able to use a computer to check information or store pictures.
- Good Communication: It’s important to talk to patients, doctors, and your team clearly and kindly.
- Attention to Detail: You’ll need to carefully follow instructions and pay close attention to the patient’s needs.
Responsibilities:
