We are looking for a Community Behavioral Health Advocate to join our team. In this role, you will help people who are struggling with their mental health and guide them to get the support they need. You’ll work with people in your community to help them feel better, connect them with services, and make their lives easier.
Job Summary
As a Community Behavioral Health Advocate, your main job will be to help people with mental health problems get the support and care they need. You will work closely with individuals to help them understand their challenges, find the right services, and make sure they get the help they need.
You’ll also work with other people, like doctors, social workers, and local groups, to make sure everyone is working together to support the person’s mental health journey. You will be helping to build a stronger and healthier community.
Job Responsibilities
As a Community Behavioral Health Advocate, here’s what you’ll be doing:
1. Helping People Understand Their Mental Health Needs:
- Talk to people and listen to their concerns about their mental health.
- Help them understand what they need to do to get better and explain how services work.
2. Connecting People to Mental Health Services:
- Help people find and access the right mental health services, such as counseling or therapy.
- Refer people to places that can help them, like local hospitals or support groups.
3. Talking to the Community:
- Tell people in the community about the mental health services available to them.
- Set up community events or meetings to explain how people can get help with their mental health.
4. Tracking Clients’ Progress:
- Keep notes and records on how people are doing and make sure they are getting the right help.
- Check in with people to see how they’re doing and if they need more help.
5. Being an Advocate for Mental Health Services:
- Support programs that help people with mental health problems.
- Speak up for people who need mental health services, making sure they get the help they deserve.
6. Helping in Crisis Situations:
- When someone is in a crisis, help them stay calm and get them the right emergency services.
- Offer comfort and support during tough times.
7. Working with Other Helpers:
- Work together with other workers, like social workers, counselors, and doctors, to make sure people get the best care.
- Share important information about people’s needs so everyone can help in the right way.
Skills You Need
To do a great job as a Community Behavioral Health Advocate, you’ll need these skills:
Required Skills:
- Good Communication Skills: You should be able to talk clearly and listen to people so they feel comfortable sharing their problems.
- Caring and Kind: You need to be kind, patient, and understanding when talking to people who are going through tough times.
- Problem-Solving: Sometimes people will have difficult problems, and you’ll need to think of ways to help them.
- Organized: You should be able to keep track of people’s needs and follow up to make sure they’re getting help.
- Respectful of Differences: You should respect all people, no matter where they come from or what their background is.
- Teamwork: You’ll be working with many people, so you need to enjoy working together to help others.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in Mental Health: If you’ve worked before in mental health, social work, or healthcare, that’s a plus!
- Knowledge of Local Resources: It helps if you know about mental health services in San Diego County, but don’t worry if you don’t — we’ll teach you!
- Speaking Other Languages: If you can speak a second language (like Spanish), it will help you connect with more people in the community.
Education and Experience
Here’s what we’re looking for in terms of education and experience:
- Education: You should have at least a high school diploma or something similar. If you have some college classes in mental health, social work, or another related subject, that’s great!
- Experience: If you’ve worked in healthcare or social services before, that’s a plus! But if you haven’t, don’t worry. We are happy to train the right person who is eager to help others.
