Health & Human Services Agency is looking for a Youth Mental Health Coordinator who will help support young people and make sure they get the help they need for their mental health.
As a Youth Mental Health Coordinator, you’ll have the chance to work with kids, families, schools, and other groups to make sure young people feel happy, healthy, and supported. You’ll be a big part of creating programs and activities that help kids learn how to manage their emotions, talk about their feelings, and get the support they need when life gets hard.
Job Summary
The Youth Mental Health Coordinator will help organize and manage programs that support the mental health of young people in San Diego County. You will work with schools, families, and other groups to make sure kids have the help they need. Your job is to make sure young people are aware of mental health services, encourage them to talk about their feelings, and help create a safe space for everyone.
You will help find resources for kids who need extra support. This may include helping them connect with counselors or other mental health professionals. You’ll also help families and teachers understand how to support kids’ mental health.
Responsibilities
As a Youth Mental Health Coordinator, you will have the following tasks:
- Organize Programs
You will help plan and run programs that teach young people about mental health. This includes setting up activities and making sure the programs are helpful for kids and teens. - Work with Schools and Families
You will work closely with schools, parents, and other community groups to make sure young people know where to find help when they need it. You will also help teachers and parents understand mental health and how to support kids. - Provide Support
You will talk with kids one-on-one and help them work through their problems. You’ll listen to what they are going through and guide them to the right kind of help if they need it. - Teach Others
You will help train teachers, parents, and others in the community to understand mental health. This means helping them learn how to spot signs that a young person might be struggling and how they can help. - Keep Records
You will track how the programs are doing, making sure they are helping the kids who need support. You’ll also keep notes on the progress of the kids you are helping, so we can make sure everything is going well. - Help in Crisis Situations
If a young person is in a difficult or dangerous situation, you will step in to help them. You will know how to get them the right help quickly and make sure they are safe. - Advocate for Youth
You will speak up for young people and make sure their needs are met. This means working with local leaders to make sure there are enough resources and support for youth mental health in the community.
Qualifications
To become a Youth Mental Health Coordinator, you will need:
Required Skills
- Great Communication Skills: You need to be able to talk to kids, parents, and teachers in a way that is clear and easy to understand. It’s also important to listen carefully to what young people are saying.
- Kindness and Understanding: You must be able to understand how young people feel and be able to offer support in a caring way. Empathy means putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and being there for them when they need it.
- Problem Solving: Sometimes young people face big problems. You need to be good at thinking of creative solutions and finding ways to help them feel better.
- Understanding of Different Cultures: People come from many different backgrounds, and it’s important to understand and respect each person’s culture and beliefs when helping them with mental health.
- Teamwork Skills: You will work with teachers, parents, and other people in the community, so it’s important to be a good team player and work well with others.
- Organization: You’ll be juggling a lot of tasks and programs, so you need to stay organized and make sure everything gets done on time.
Preferred Skills
- Speaking Another Language: It’s not required, but speaking another language, like Spanish, could be very helpful. Many families in the community speak different languages, so being able to communicate with them is a big plus.
- Knowledge of Local Resources: It will help if you know where to find local mental health resources in San Diego County. This will help you guide youth and their families to the right services.
- Experience Working with Young People: If you have worked with kids or teens before, either as a volunteer or in a job, that will help you understand their needs better.
Education and Experience
- Education: You need a Bachelor’s degree in something like social work, psychology, counseling, or a similar field. If you have a Master’s degree, that’s even better, but not required.
- Experience: You should have at least 2 years of experience helping young people in some way. This could be through counseling, teaching, or working in a related field. If you have worked in programs or services that help youth, that’s great!
Location
This job is based in San Diego County, California, so you will be working in different locations throughout the county. This includes schools, community centers, and meeting with families and other groups.
