Mental Health Therapy Aide (MHTA)
SUNY Upstate Medical University is hiring a Mental Health Therapy Aide for the Golisano Center for Special Needs in Syracuse, NY. If you are interested in helping people with mental health needs and have a high school diploma or GED, this is a great opportunity for you!
As a Mental Health Therapy Aide, your job will be to help patients on the psychiatric inpatient units. You will work with the team to make sure patients get the best care and support. Your tasks will include helping patients with their daily needs, managing patient data, and helping with their treatment plans.

Job Responsibilities:
As a Mental Health Therapy Aide, your duties will include:
- Work with the Treatment Team: You will attend daily meetings with the team that plans the treatment for patients. You’ll help discuss how each patient is doing and what care they need.
- Help with Patient Care: You will assist patients with daily activities, like eating and personal hygiene, while always respecting their privacy and dignity.
- Follow Treatment Plans: You will help carry out the treatment plans that have been created for the patients.
- Manage Data: You will keep track of important data, like patients’ progress and the treatment they are receiving. You’ll also help figure out what affects their health and care.
- Use Time Wisely: Sometimes you will be asked to do other tasks, so you should always be ready to work quickly and efficiently.
- Professional Behavior: You will be expected to act professionally, which means being respectful and helpful to everyone, including patients and coworkers.
- Physical Support for Patients: Sometimes, you might need to help manage patients physically. You’ll be trained to do this safely and carefully.
Minimum Qualifications:
To apply for this position, you must meet these basic requirements:
- Education: You need to have a high school diploma or a GED (General Educational Development) certificate.
- Experience: You do not need experience in mental health care, but it’s helpful if you have worked directly with patients before.
Preferred Qualifications:
It’s not required, but if you have worked for one year or more in a mental health setting (like a hospital or care facility), it would be a plus.
Work Schedule:
- Work Hours: This is a full-time job with a rotating shift schedule. You will work two 12-hour shifts and two 8-hour shifts each week. You will also work every other weekend and some holidays.
- Days Off: Your days off will rotate, so you will have different days off each week.
Compensation:
- The starting salary for this job is $46,819 per year.
- If you are hired, you will also get an extra $4,000 in pay because the job is located in Syracuse.
