Job Summary
As the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, your job is to help people in Harris County get ready for emergencies like floods, hurricanes, or other disasters. You will create and update plans to make sure people know how to stay safe during a disaster. You will also teach people how to prepare and what to do if something bad happens. You will be the person everyone turns to for help and advice about being ready for emergencies.
Responsibilities
As the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, your job will include many important tasks:
- Making Plans for Disasters: You will help create plans that explain what to do during a disaster. These plans will help the community stay safe when something bad happens, like a flood or a hurricane.
- Training People: You will help train people in the community, like teachers, business owners, and first responders, so they know what to do during an emergency. You will lead classes and share helpful information.
- Working with Other Groups: You will work with many other groups, such as the police, firefighters, hospitals, and the government, to make sure everyone works together in an emergency.
- Helping the Community: You will go to schools, businesses, and other places to talk to people about how to prepare for disasters. You will make sure they have the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe.
- Checking for Dangers: You will look at things in the community that might be risky during a disaster, like places that could flood. Then, you will come up with ways to make those things safer.
- Keeping Records: You will keep track of the training you do, the plans you make, and other things related to disaster preparedness. This helps everyone stay on track and make improvements.
- Helping During Disasters: If a disaster happens, you might need to help out. You could help with organizing the response or helping others get the resources they need.
- Reporting Progress: You will write reports about how disaster planning is going and share these reports with others to show what is working and what can be better.
- Improving Plans: You will always be looking for ways to make plans better. This could mean learning about new tools or methods that can help the community prepare for disasters.
Qualifications
To be the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, there are some skills and experience you will need.
Required Skills:
- Good Communication: You must be able to talk clearly and explain things so everyone can understand, whether you’re teaching a class or working with other groups.
- Problem-Solving: Disasters can be tricky. You will need to think fast and figure out ways to solve problems when they come up.
- Leadership: You will lead training classes and help others learn what to do. Being a good leader means helping others work together and stay safe.
- Attention to Detail: You will need to pay attention to small details to make sure everything is done right, like checking disaster plans and keeping track of training.
- Comfort with Public Speaking: You will talk to groups of people, so it is important to feel comfortable speaking in front of others and explaining things clearly.

- Knowing Local Risks: Understanding the risks in Harris County, like floods or hurricanes, will help you plan better for emergencies.
- Certifications in Emergency Management: If you have any special training or certificates in emergency management (like FEMA), that would be a big plus.
- Speaking Other Languages: If you can speak Spanish, it will help you communicate with more people in the community.
Education and Experience
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a subject like Emergency Management, Public Health, or Environmental Science is required. If you have a different degree but related experience, you may still be a good fit for the job.
Experience:
- It’s helpful to have at least 2 years of experience in planning or working with emergencies. This could be in schools, hospitals, local government, or community groups.
- Having experience in helping organize events, leading groups, or speaking to large crowds will also be very useful.
Location
This job is based in Harris County, Houston, Texas. You will be working in different places around the county, including schools, businesses, and government buildings. Some travel within Harris County may be needed.
