About the Job
As a Public Health Nurse, your main job is to help people in the community stay healthy. You will help by giving health advice, providing care, and teaching people how to avoid getting sick. Responsibilities
Here’s what you’ll do every day:
1. Help People Stay Healthy
- Check people’s health: You will visit people in their homes or clinics to check if they are healthy or need care.
- Give advice on health: Teach people how to stay healthy and prevent sickness. This could be about eating healthy food, exercising, or how to avoid getting a cold.
- Provide medical care: Sometimes, you will help people with vaccines, shots, or other health tests.
2. Teach the Community
- Health education: You will talk to groups of people and give them advice about health. You might teach classes in schools or community centers.
- Answer health questions: You will help answer any health-related questions from the community, like how to avoid getting the flu or how to care for a sick family member.
3. Work with Other Health Professionals
- Work with doctors and other nurses: You won’t be alone! You will work with other doctors, nurses, and health workers to take care of people’s health.
- Help create health programs: You may help make special health programs to help children get vaccinated or teach families about healthy eating.
4. Make Sure Health Programs Work Well
- Track progress: You will make sure that the health programs are working and helping people get healthier.
- Make reports: Sometimes, you will need to write down what you’ve been doing to help others so that everyone knows how the health programs are going.
What You Need for This Job
Required Skills
To be a Public Health Nurse, you should have:
- Nursing License: You need to be a Registered Nurse (RN) in California. This means you’ve completed nursing school and passed the exams.
- Experience with Public Health: It’s helpful to have some experience working with public health, like helping people prevent sickness or teaching health classes.
- Good Communication: You need to talk clearly and kindly to people. This means listening well and explaining health ideas in a simple way so everyone understands.
- Caring and Friendly Attitude: You must enjoy helping people and be kind, patient, and respectful to everyone you meet.
- Teamwork: You’ll need to work with doctors, other nurses, and community workers, so being a team player is important.
- Problem Solving: You will need to think of ways to help people when they have health problems.
Preferred Skills
While not required, these skills would make you an even better fit for the job:
- Bilingual: If you speak more than one language, like Spanish, that will help you talk to more people.

Education and Experience
