Job Summary
As an Epidemiologist, you will use data to study diseases and health patterns in the community. You will help us understand how illnesses spread and find ways to prevent them from spreading even more. You’ll also help make important decisions that improve the health of people in San Diego County.
Your work will help guide health programs, and you will help teach others about keeping healthy. By studying how diseases move from one person to another, you’ll help protect families and communities from getting sick.
Responsibilities
Here’s a list of what you will be doing:
1. Collecting and Analyzing Data
- You will collect health data from hospitals, clinics, and other health organizations.
- You will study how diseases like the flu or COVID-19 spread and try to figure out why people get sick.
2. Sharing What You Find
- After you look at the data, you will write reports to share what you learned.
- You will tell health experts and leaders what needs to be done to stop diseases and protect people.
3. Watching for Health Problems
- You will keep an eye on diseases and health trends in San Diego County.
- If there is an outbreak of illness, you will help find out how to stop it from spreading.
4. Helping Health Programs
- You will work with other people to make health programs that help prevent disease.

5. Working with Other Health Groups

6. Teaching People About Health

Qualifications
We’re looking for someone who is smart, organized, and passionate about public health. Here’s what you need to know and be able to do:
Required Skills:
- Great at looking at data: You need to be good at reading and understanding information, like numbers and charts.
- Know how diseases spread: You need to understand how diseases move from person to person.
- Good at explaining things: You need to be able to talk to other people about your findings in a way they can understand.
- Solve problems: You should be good at thinking of solutions to keep people healthy.
- Be very careful with details: Your work needs to be accurate and precise.
- Computer skills: You should know how to use a computer to work with data.
Preferred Skills:
- GIS or mapping skills: It’s helpful if you know how to use maps or special tools to track where diseases are happening.
- Experience in public health: If you’ve worked with health programs before, that’s a bonus.
- Bilingual skills: If you speak Spanish (or other languages), it’s a plus because many people in San Diego speak different languages.
Education and Experience
You’ll need to meet the following requirements to apply for this job:
Education:
- You need a Bachelor’s degree in a subject like Public Health or Epidemiology (the study of diseases).

Experience:

Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is between $65,000 and $85,000 per year, depending on your experience. You will also receive a lot of great benefits, including:
